AUTHOR: Megan Angelo
GENRE: Contemporary Fiction | Dystopian Fiction
RELEASE DATE: January 14, 2020
PUBLISHER: Graydon House Books
How far would you go to achieve fame? Would you lie? Manipulate? Cheat? Would you be willing to give up your entire sense of self just so millions of strangers knew your name?
In Followers, fame is the aim. Not necessarily the highly-respectable type of fame like that of great talents, minds, or heroes; no, the quality of fame doesn’t matter. The cheap seats are just fine. At least for Floss and Orla.
Floss is pretty and can sing, but aside from that she doesn’t have much going for her. And she knows it. Yet, she’s determined to make herself known. And from that desperation, and with the help of her blogger roommate Orla, a plan is hatched to turn Floss into a true celebrity. And it works.
As the girls are hurtled into their new world of fame, they realize just how much their lifestyle requires of them as it demands more and more. As Orla and Floss fight to keep their celebrity statuses, their public avatars begin to mix with their inner identities, causing the lines between public and private, fake and real, corrupt and sincere, to become so tangled they have no idea where their private lives starts and their public ones end.
But when a devastating attack jolts America, it’s time to decide if fame is really worth everything it requires.
Thirty-five years later, after the horrible attack now known as The Spill, in a government sanctioned town called Constellation, fame is still rampant. At least for this secluded community, where all the members are specifically chosen and bred to live out their entire lives on camera for their millions of followers tuning in to watch their every move.
Now, in a time where drones do the housework and smartphones are obsolete, replaced with devices that connect directly to brain waves, the same questions still run through the minds of those being watched—what’s the point? Do I really want this? How can I get out?
WHY THIS IS A MUST-READ:
Part contemporary fiction and part dystopian, this is an extremely fun and gripping story. It’s shocking, hilarious, and at times, humbling. Followers is a satire on our obsession with celebrities, reality TV, social media, and our followers count. This book serves as a fun escape read, while also forcing us to consider what the implications of our everyday, seemingly innocuous actions might really be.
